If you have a spare half an hour (or so), you can learn more about the use of wood in non-residential buildings while earning an HSW/SD credit—without leaving your desk. McGraw-Hill Construction recently posted its April Continuing Education article, “Testing Timber’s Limits – Designers push a traditional material to create longer spans, reach new heights, and find unconventional applications.”

After reading the article and taking the online test, participants will be able to:

·         Explain how wood components sequester carbon

·         Describe how wood can be used in long spans and tall structures

·         Discuss engineering challenges involved in using wood in such structures

·         Discuss code-compliance issues that relate to using wood in such structures

The article was written by Joann Gonchar, AIA, and was first published in the April 2010 issue of Architectural Record.
